Stefan Schmidt is a landscape ecologist and focuses on the topics of valuation of ecosystem services, knowledge management and analysis of geo-data. He studied at the Leibniz University Hannover (Dipl. Geogr.), spent one academic year in South America at the Universities of Buenos Aires (Postgrado, Argentina) and Cartagena de Indias (Postgrado, Colombia) and did his doctorate at the Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Dr.rer. Nat.)in cooperation with the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research - UFZ, Leipzig. In the research project PlanSmart he deals with transdisciplinary approaches to tackle societal challenges (nature-based solutions). For instance, he models nature-based solutions in the Lahn river basin and estimates their impact on ecosystem services.
