PlanSmart is structured in four project clusters and eleven individual projects.

The cluster ‘Risks and Effectiveness’ will generate system knowledge on water-borne challenges and the effects of nature-based solutions, also in comparison with technical alternatives.

The ‘Co-Design’ cluster concerns the transdisciplinary planning of nature-based solutions. It integrates the risks and effects identified in ’Risks and Effectiveness’ and prepares and evaluates comprehensive, spatial scenarios under consideration of trade-offs and synergies. Cluster ‘Governance and Implementation’ addresses topics of knowledge co-generation and governance. The final cluster, ‘Overarching Tasks’, involves coordination and technical support.
